The Butterfly
Many different types of butterfly wings are used for Zaritsky's art. Butterflies all belong to class Insecta, order Lepidoptera, they have certain characteristics in common. The major similarities are outlined below.
1. Two Pairs of Scale Wings - These wings are overlapping on a membrane, they are made for flight. This is the part of the butterfly that is collected for artistic uses.
2. Bearing Antennae - Butterflies and moths both have a pair of antennae.
3. Tube-like Mouth Parts - For sucking up liquid foods.
4. Compound Eyes with single ocelli above each.
On top of these common characteristics, butterflies also go through full four stage metamorphosis. The stages shown left are: egg, caterpillar, pupae and adult. Pictured below is an adult Peacock butterfly Inachis io.

Butterflies in societyButterflies play a very important role in our society, especially in regards to pollination. As an adult, butterflies mostly drink nectar with their mouth parts. This puts them in a prime location to collect pollen. From this point the adult butterfly spreads the precious cargo to many different flowers effectively pollinating them. They play a similar role to that of the honey bee and without them, fruit and vegetable production would be significantly lower and an innumerable amount of crops would be lost. Butterflies also represent grace and beauty and are a constant reminder of how beautiful something natural can be. They are also some of the most colorful beings on our planet. Vadim Zaritsky wants to show people how much they need insects, how important of a role that they play. He wants to tell people that without insects, our race would not be able to exist.
